How to Avoid Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (retina). It can cause blindness if left undiagnosed and untreated. However, it usually takes several years for diabetic retinopathy to reach a stage where it could threaten your sight.

  1. Manage your diabetes.
  2. Monitor your blood sugar level.
  3. Ask your doctor about a glycosylated hemoglobin test.
  4. Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control.
  5. If you smoke or use other types of tobacco, ask your doctor to help you quit.
  6. Pay attention to vision changes.
