May is the turning point in the year where temperatures rise and flowers fully bloom. The world breaks out into a riot of color. Anishnaabe also called it the Blossom Moon. Mohawk tribe called it the Big Leaf Moon.
One very important plant this season—and it is not a flower—is corn. An important staple food for many. Some call May’s full moon is the Corn Planting Moon. This is the perfect time to start preparing the fields for farming and sowing the seeds saved up from last year. Beans, squash and potatoes are planted now.
