Cedar Named cedar, it is actually a juniper. The Eastern Red Cedar (Junipers Virginiana, eastern juniper, red juniper, red cedar) is a pioneer species, being one of the first plants to repopulate a clear cut or damaged piece of land. Traditionally, cedar is used to purify the home. When cedar is placed in a fire with tobacco, it crackles. This crackling sound attracts the attention of the spirits to show them the offering. Branches of cedar are used in ceremonies as a form of protection and to cover the floor in sweat lodges. Cedar makes a potent healing bath. It is thought that cedar sits in the north door (however this differs between Nations).
